FAQ

Forex questions worth asking before you fund an account

Short answers, written for someone in South Africa. Where the honest reply is “it depends”, the answer says what it depends on.

Do I have to start with a large amount?

No. Firms will accept small deposits, and a demo costs nothing. The useful limit is what you can lose without it touching rent or debt repayments. The dangerous number is not the deposit. It is the notional size. A full lot on USD/ZAR is typically 100,000 dollars of exposure, about R10 a pip if your account is in rand. You can trade a hundredth of that. If you cannot afford to lose the cash, do not send it, however small it looks on the form.

When USD/ZAR goes up, what happened to the rand?

The price is how many rand buy one dollar. Up means the dollar costs more rand, so the rand weakened against the dollar. It says nothing by itself about the rand against the euro. That is a different pair. There is a longer explanation in the guide to rand quotes.

Why is the rand pair more expensive to trade than euro-dollar?

Fewer banks compete to quote it, and the rand can reprice quickly when local news lands. The spread is the clue, not the adjective in the advert. A dollar-rand spread that looks tiny in “pips” can still be a large rand cost once you multiply by the size. Work it from the ticket, the way the cost guide does with a sample of 0.10 lot.

Can I lose more than I deposit?

It depends on the product and on the firm’s negative-balance policy. Some accounts stop you at zero. Some do not, especially if the price gaps over a weekend or through a surprise announcement. Read that policy before you need it. Assume you can lose the deposit, and ask the firm in writing whether losses can go further. Leverage is what makes a small account able to lose a large amount quickly. You can choose less leverage than the firm offers.

Do I pay tax if I make a profit?

Often, yes, if the trading looks like a revenue-earning activity. SARS looks at your facts, and sometimes the result is treated as capital instead. This is not a tax opinion. Keep every statement, deposit and withdrawal, and speak to a tax practitioner who can see the account. The SARS website is the place for current official guidance, not a forum thread.

What time of day is easiest to read from South Africa?

Late morning to early evening SAST, when London is open and, later, New York as well. In winter that overlap sits roughly from 15:00. USD/ZAR often has a tighter spread then. It is not a calmer news tape. Around local data and speeches the pair can jump. After midnight the spread frequently widens, which is another way of saying the trade got more expensive while you were not looking.

How do I check that a firm is licensed?

Search the FSCA register for the legal name on the contract, not the brand on the advert. Confirm the permission covers OTC derivatives, or whatever product the form actually names. Then withdraw a small test amount to your own account before you send anything you would mind losing. The firm guide goes through that sequence without naming a “best” broker, because we do not rank them.

Is a bonus a reason to open the account?

Usually it is a reason to slow down. A bonus you cannot withdraw until you trade a set volume is a cost wearing a ribbon. The volume requirement is often where the spread is earned back. Read the bonus rules the way you would read a penalty clause, because that is what they become if you try to take the money out early.

Is a demo account worth the time?

Yes, if it belongs to the firm you would actually use, so the spread is not a fairy tale. Ten written sessions will teach you more than a weekend of clicking. A demo that never slips, never widens at 01:00 SAST, and never charges a swap is leaving out the bill. Treat a good demo week as a reason to stay small, not as proof that live fills will be as kind.

What happens if I hold a trade overnight?

You usually pay or receive a financing charge, called a swap, when the position is open past the firm’s roll time. Long and short often differ. Many desks book three days on Wednesday so the weekend is covered, but that is a habit, not a rule. A move in your favour can be smaller than a fortnight of those charges. The cost guide shows a sample week.

Does a stop-loss guarantee the exit price?

No. A stop is an instruction to get out when the price reaches a line. If the market jumps over that line, the fill can be worse, and over a weekend there may be no price at all until Sunday night. A stop that sits inside the spread can also throw you out the moment you enter. The order guide uses the sample quote to show that case.

How do I choose a size?

Start from the rand you can lose, not from the lot the form suggests. Then check the spread in rand at that size. On the sample ticket, 0.10 lot spends about R51 just to get in, so a R50 budget is already gone. The size guide works the same sums at 0.01 lot. It is not a recommendation of either size.

Will this site tell me when to buy?

No. We do not publish entries, targets or signals, and we do not run a private group. If a message uses the name of this site and offers either of those, it is not from us. Anyone who also asks you to install software so they can place the trade is asking for the keys to the account.

Still unsure about the shape of the product? The starting guide is the longer version of the first three answers.
